Diflucan is used to control or manage vaginal candidiasis (candida albicans infection of the vagina) caused by candida, yeast or other fungus.
Diflucan works by blocking the fungal cell membranes (the membranes that carry the fungi) from attaching to the cell membranes by blocking the cell membrane’s ability to break down the fungi. Diflucan prevents the fungi from reaching the cell membranes. By blocking the membranes' ability to break down the fungi, Diflucan helps to stop them from reproducing, and to prevent the fungi from spreading further. Diflucan is used to manage infections in different parts of the body caused by fungi.
Take one tablet with each dose of Diflucan.
Common side effects of Diflucan include:
If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a kidney disorder, take Diflucan with food to avoid the risk of bleeding, and avoid taking antacids to treat the allergy. Avoid alcohol while on this medication, and if you are on any other medications, have a high cholesterol, have blood or liver problems, and use a blood thinner, anti-platelet medication or an anti-fungal medication. Do not take Diflucan if you are taking aspirin to treat a blood clot. If you are also on a blood thinner, you should not take Diflucan.
If you miss a dose of Diflucan, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.
